Burst sprinkler floods Oak Grove Elementary School

Posted: Updated:

The North Clackamas School District canceled classes at Oak Grove Elementary School Monday after a burst sprinkler in the ceiling flooded classrooms and hallways.

Cleanup crews spent Sunday evening vacuuming water out of carpeting and inspecting the damage, believed to have been caused by the freezing temperatures.

Eight classrooms were impacted.

The district will make an announcement on Monday regarding whether the school will open on Tuesday.

Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue released the following tips to protect your pipes from freezing temperatures:

- Know how to shut off the water to your home and unhook outside hoses from faucets.

- Place foam covers over outside faucets and crawl space openings.

- Leaving a trickle of water running from a faucet farthest away from the water meter can be helpful.

- You can also wrap insulating material or electrical wire heating wrap around the pipes. This can be purchased at any home improvement store.

- Never use a propane torch or an open flame to thaw a pipe due to the risk of igniting wood beams, flooring and other combustible materials around pipes.
