Thieves ransacked a North Portland home and stole thousands of dollars worth of property, and though the victims were able to recover a computer stolen in the crime, there's no way of tracking - or replacing - their cat's ashes.
Chelsa Shelton kept the remains of her cat Bubba Dale in her rental home until a thief took them Friday.
"That's the most sentimental thing they could have taken from me because he literally just passed away this summer. For me, he's the cat I've had the longest, like my kid," Shelton said. "It's like losing them all over again."
The burglar broke into the home through a window. During the burglary, the thief stole Shelton's bike, a computer and most of her jewelry. Shelton's roommate, Samantha Young, also had her jewelry and computer stolen, but they used the Apple tracking feature to find it at a home in Vancouver.
"We got in he car and drove over to Vancouver and we staked out this house," Shelton said.
Shelton and Young called Vancouver police, and officers recovered it from a man who said the bought it from a transient.
The rest of their items, however, remain missing, and Shelton and Young are preparing for the possibility they'll never be recovered.
"I had just said to her the day before, 'I have got to get renter's insurance on my bike and things in general.' And the next day, it's all gone," Shelton said.
Friends of the victims have since set up an account on the fundraising site youcaring.com.
