Rescuers: Kids OK after falling through ice

Posted: Updated:

Several kids are OK after falling through some ice in the Minthorne Springs wetland area in Milwaukie.

A homeless man passing by saw a group of kids near the water, heard some ice cracking, then several calls for help, investigators said. The man thought several kids had fallen into the water, so he went across the street to call 911, they added.

Those were frightening moments near a Milwaukie pond Monday after a man heard ice cracking and calls for help.

Firefighters and rescue teams arrived to search for the kids in the water. While they were searching in an area about 30 yards wide, investigators learned that six kids between the ages of 12 and 13 had been near the water when three of them fell through the ice and into the water below, investigators said.

The kids who fell into the water were able to get out and were gone by the time rescue crews arrived on the scene, investigators said. None of them were hurt.

Investigators said it's a dangerous lesson of what can happen when area ponds, lakes or rivers freeze this time of year.

"Stay away from the water. The water temperature is extremely cold. Your chances of survival if you fall in area limited, at best," said Patrick DeLair, Clackamas Fire. "If you are going to be near water ... fishing or recreating ... wear a life jacket. Wear appropriate clothing that can keep you warm."

Rescuers said if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, try to relax so you can float back to the surface of the water then paddle to the closest shore. The closest shore may be behind you, DeLair said.
