18-year-old tried to save man in icy water accident

A Portland family is mourning the death of a father and husband after he died in a car accident on Highway 30.

They're also expressing their gratitude to an 18-year-old who risked his own life to try to save him.

Last Friday afternoon, David Glatfelter — better known as Danny — was driving along the highway when he hit a patch of ice and lost control of his pickup truck.

It flipped and landed in a waterway. Glatfelter died at the scene.

"Just a tremendous man, as big as he was physically, his heart was twice as big," Glatfelter's wife Jeanette Turner said.

But the story doesn't end there.

It turns out there was an 18-year old who had tried to save Glatfelter.

When he saw his truck flip, he ran to help. He jumped into the chest-high frigid water and pried the door open.

He cut Glatfelter's seatbelt and, together with several other people, pulled him to a nearby bank. They performed CPR before emergency responders arrived.

Tuesday night was the first time Glatfelter's family heard of the heroic act.

"Oh my God. We haven't even contacted those people. We don't know who they are and we would love to see them," Turner said.

There is a fund set up for the family at Wells Fargo under the name David Glatfelter.
