After reports that a baby was murdered at a Gladstone motel, the body of a 5-month-old child was found in a wooded area in Clackamas County.

Police said the child's mother contacted officers at 5 p.m. Monday to say she believed her baby had been murdered and the body was left at a park.

During a subsequent interview, the mother was able to provide enough information to lead detectives to search a wooded area within Clackamas County.

At 2 a.m. Tuesday, a search team located the baby's body. The exact location and the name of the park are not being released at this time, according to police.

Investigators believe the baby was taken to the wooded area between 12:15 p.m. and 1:40 p.m. Dec. 7.

Workers at the Budget Inn, 19240 SE McLoughlin Blvd., told Fox 12 that a man and woman checked in with a baby last week, but checked out without the child Dec. 7.

A motel desk clerk said a housekeeper found bloody baby clothes in the couple's room, but threw them away because there were no reports of violence or criminal activity.

Motel workers claimed they later learned the baby's body was found in a dumpster, but that was not the case, according to police.

A possible witness, Jennifer Dalbey, told FOX 12 that she was waiting for a ride home outside of the motel on Monday and witnessed the same couple fighting.

She claims things were getting ugly, so she stepped in and the man ran off.

"After the man left, she kept saying to me, 'I wish I could tell you what he did. He's sick. He's a sick dude,'" said Dalbey.

"I said, 'What did he do?' and she said, 'He killed my baby. He suffocated my baby with blankets.'"

Dalbey said she then asked the woman to get in the car with her, and she reportedly drove her to the police department to report what had happened.

Gladstone police said no suspects are in custody related to this case. Officers added that the mother is cooperating with the investigation and is not considered a suspect.

The baby was believed to have been taken to the wooded area in a blue Chevrolet Blazer with Oregon license plates. Police said that vehicle was found in Salem and is no longer of interest in the case.

The Clackamas County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on the baby Tuesday, but the cause of death remains undetermined pending further investigation.

This investigation is being conducted by the Clackamas County Major Crimes team and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Child Abuse Team. Anyone with information is asked to call the Detective Kevin Voss at 503-557-2762.
