PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Water Bureau crews are working to repair a broken water main in Southwest Portland.

Crews said the eight-inch pipe ruptured just after midnight at SW Vista between Elm Street and Spring Street due to freezing temperatures.

Water flowed into the street but no flooding damage was reported.

Crews said around 6:30 a.m. Thursday they planned to shut down water in the area for eight hours for repairs.

The decision caused Ainsworth Elementary School to close on Wednesday, Portland City officials said.

SW Vista Avenue, a residential street between SW Elm Street and SW Spring Street, was closed except to local residents.

Traffic was detoured around the work zone.

Crews said the cast iron pipe was installed in 1927.

The Water Bureau's crews are called out at all hours day and night to repair broken water mains an average of 200 times a year, according to the bureau.
