A Portland State University student is recovering after a man assaulted her during an attempted robbery.
According to the Campus Public Safety Office, the female student said the attack happened as she was walking to her car at Southwest Montgomery, between Southwest Broadway and Sixth Avenue, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
"It's scary, you know, there's not only students we're socializing with, but also anybody who wants to be downtown can also be on our campus," said PSU student Bailey Anderson.
The victim told investigators that a stranger came up to her, demanded her backpack, and hit her in the face with a closed fist.
The victim hit the suspect in the face and he took off eastbound on Montgomery, FOX 12 learned.
The victim suffered an injury to her face and received medical attention.
"I'm not really surprised, you know, we're in the heart of the city and downtown Portland is a dangerous area," said student Richie English. "I'm happy to know she's safe, and that she fought back, maybe that will send a message to others if they try to attack."
The suspect is described as a white man in his mid-20s, approximately 5'8" tall, and wearing a green puffy coat.
He may have an injury to his face.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Campus Public Safety Office at 503-725-4407.
Campus Security tells FOX 12 this is the third robbery on the streets that run through their campus in 2013.
