Man stabbed using pay phone near NE Portland park

Posted: Updated:

A man was taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon after he was stabbed while using a pay phone in Northeast Portland.

Officers were called to the scene at Northeast 11th and Holladay Street at 2:30 p.m.

Witnesses say the man was stabbed in the neck.

"He was holding his neck before he dropped to the ground, and he was still holding his neck as he was crossing the street," said witness Heather Carter.

The man reportedly ran into the Quiznos Sub on the corner of 11th avenue and Holladay, holding his neck and gasping for help.

Employees tell FOX 12 they closed down the store to help him, as he sat down and waited for paramedics.

Police blocked the intersection while other officers canvassed the area for the suspect.

"That is crazy, we walk past this circle every day, literally every day because the kids go to the mall all the time, this is really crazy," said Portland resident Nickolas Elwell.

The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The victim told Quiznos employees his attacker was a stranger to him, and he claimed he didn't know why he was attacked. Police have not confirmed that at this point.

The suspect is described as a black man with short hair wearing a red hoodie, a black jacket, blue jeans and white shoes. He was last seen in Holladay Park.

Officers searched the area, but did not find the suspect. Investigators are now reviewing surveillance video taken in the area to try and get more information about this case.
