PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Zoo's baby river otter needs a name, and Oregon rivers will serve as the inspiration.

Zookeepers are asking for the public's help in picking a name for Tilly's month-old pup, born Nov. 8.

When naming river otters, zoo workers said they like to choose names based on local waterways. Tilly was named after the Tillamook River and her previous pup, Mo, born Jan. 28, was named after the Molalla River.

In this case, three names are currently under consideration. They are: Trask, for the river in northwest Oregon that empties into Tillamook Bay; Zigzag, with the nickname of Ziggy, for the 12-mile-long tributary of the Sandy River that flows down Mount Hood through the Zigzag Canyon; and Willamette, or Willy for short, after the major Columbia River tributary that runs through downtown Portland.

Tilly and her baby remain in a private maternity den, and it will likely be another month before zoo visitors can see them. Young river otters usually open their eyes after three to six weeks, and begin walking at about five weeks.

Zookeepers said young river otters are very dependent on their mothers, and Tilly has been very nurturing with her as-of-yet unnamed pup.

You can vote for your favorite name at OregonZoo.org through Dec. 19.
