Cat's leg amputated after being shot with pellet gun

Posted: Updated:

A veterinarian amputated a cat's leg after it was shot with a pellet gun in southeast Portland.

Harvey the cat came home limping Tuesday afternoon, said his owner, Brigette Wilson.

An X-ray revealed a pellet shattered his leg. Wilson said the injury was too close to the shoulder joint, so the vet removed Harvey's front left leg on Wednesday.

While Wilson expects Harvey to be fairly mobile once he adapts to life with three legs, the injury is upsetting.

"He's always been the kind of cat that's in the crowd, wants to be around everyone," said Wilson. "And it's just heartbreaking to see him be in so much pain and lose so much mobility."

Wilson thinks someone shot Harvey between 1:45 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. She said the cat often spends time in the alley off Southeast 85th between Southeast Morrison and Southeast Alder.

If you have any information about the shooting, contact Portland police.

A "Help for Harvey" fund was set up at U.S. Bank.
