Semi rollover closes streets in northeast Vancouver

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Thousands of gallons of fuel spilled in a Vancouver neighborhood, the mess from a tipped semi-truck shut down roads and created a traffic mess for hours.

The Vancouver Fire Department responded to the rollover accident Friday along Northeast 119th Avenue and Northeast 18th Street.

The accident happened a little after 1 a.m.

Nobody was hurt, but several blocks near Northeast 18th Street were closed while crews investigated.

Crews were able to stop the spread of that leak, and say the good news is it did not go beyond this specific Vancouver neighborhood, according to the Department of Ecology.

Administrators say that fuel has since been pumped out of the water system.

The tipped over semi-truck dumped 3300 gallons of fuel onto the ground and into area storm drains.

Investigators say it appears the truck was driving east, when the trailer hit the concrete median, causing the trailer to go over.

When the trailer moved back over the median and onto the road again, police say, the liquid in that trailer was sloshing around so strongly it caused the truck to wobble and the driver was unable to regain control.

Crews say they will be back out in the neighborhood again next week to remove all of the contaminated soil in the area.

Police say the driver wasn't cited.
