It is an emotional day for friends and family of one young Marine.
They said Noah Baird, a recent Battle Ground grad, had just finished boot camp when he came home on a short leave. On Thursday night, he was killed in a car crash.
"It's like my best friend, my brother, was just gone," friend Jacob Wedin said.
Jacob is now stationed in North Carolina, but the two met on the cross country team in Battle Ground.
From there, they did everything together. They graduated in the same class and both enlisted to become Marines.
Jacob said after more than four years at each other's side, he still can't believe his friend is gone.
"He died so soon," Wedin said. "I can't believe this is happening."
It happened on a rural road when deputies said Noah was driving and hit a pole. His passenger survived, but Noah's injuries were just too severe.
Later that night his friend and running partner, Sarah Moreno, got the call.
"I mean, I was like no he's not dead," Moreno said.
Now, Sarah wants to make sure he's not forgotten.
"He was honestly like one of the sweetest guys ever, so kind and really loving," she said.
Deputies don't know what caused the crash, they don't believe speed or driver impairment was a factor. They said it also didn't appear that the road was icy.
