Sandy woman dies in crash near Portland Airport

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A woman from Sandy died when her car crashed down an embankment off Northeast Marine Drive near the Portland International Airport on Monday night.

Mary Yakutis-Suit was 55 years old.

Airport fire and rescue crews spent the night combing the water to see if there may have been a car passenger who fell in during the crash, but it was later determined that Yakutis-Suit was the only person inside her Subaru Outback.

The crash happened just before 8 p.m. Yakutis-Suit was heading west on Marine Drive near 144th Avenue when her car went over the embankment and rolled down toward the Columbia River.

Yakutis-Suit was ejected from the car and landed on the river bank. Medical crews said she died at the scene.

Yakutis-Suit is the 33rd person to die from a traffic crash in Portland in 2013.

Officials don't know what caused the crash but said it could've been a lot worse had she swerved in the other direction toward oncoming traffic.

Police say it could take weeks before they'll know what caused Yakutis-Suit to swerve. Anyone with information about the wreck is asked to call Officer Chris Johnson at 503-82-2213.
