Mega Millions jackpot now $636 million

SALEM, OR (KPTV/AP) -

The Mega Millions jackpot for Tuesday night's drawing has increased to $636 million, making it the second-largest jackpot in history.

It's also the second-largest jackpot in the world, with the record being set in March 2012 when Mega Millions reached $656 million.

Players will have two choices on how to take their jackpot prize. A 30-year annuity will pay out $14.2 million per year after taxes. A one-time cash payment will pay out $229 million after taxes.

If you do win, the Oregon Lottery says to take these steps:

  • Sign your ticket
  • Consider putting together a trusted "team" consisting of a lawyer, financial planner and accountant
  • Call the Lottery office
  • The winner has one year from the date of the ticket's drawing to validate the winning ticket

The Tuesday night drawing will take place at 7:59 p.m. Players can purchase tickets up until 7 p.m.

Oregon has never had a Mega Millions jackpot winner, but the Oregon Lottery says Oregonians have collected nearly $30 million total in Mega Millions prizes since the state began selling Mega Millions tickets in March 2010.

Mega Millions changed its rules in October to help increase the jackpots by lowering the odds of winning the top prize to about 1 in 259 million.

Paula Otto, lead director for Mega Millions, says officials expect about 70 percent of the possible number combinations to be purchased.
