NASHVILLE, TN (RNN) – After a slow start and down two scholarship players, the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the Austin Peay Governors in a close one, winning 58-56 in Nashville.

Guard James Saikam did not start and only played 24 minutes; his play off the bench did not give the Commodores (6-3) the points needed to control the feisty Govs (5-6), and led to the visitors leading by two points at the end of the first half.

Vanderbilt lost redshirt junior Josh Henderson to a season-ending knee injury in its last game to the Marshall Thundering Herd on Dec. 5. The injury pushes the total number of scholarship players Vanderbilt has down to eight in a season that's just getting started.

Neither team led by more than four points throughout the entire contest, and the second half had more than a dozen lead changes. The Commodores finally pulled away late with the help of a missed jumper by the Governor's Travis Betran with two seconds left.

The victory now makes the Commodores 4-0 at Memorial Gym so far this season.

Center Damian Jones was the Commodores leading scorer with 12 points and seven rebounds. Forward Rod Odom had nine rebounds to accompany his 11 points, and Saikam scored eight points and had seven rebounds off the bench.

While Vanderbilt completed nearly 67 percent of its free throw shots, they were dismal from long range, only going four-of-20 from 3-point range.

The Commodores hosts its next game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Dec. 21.
