ASTORIA, OR (KPTV) -

A crew member working on pressure testing pipes in Astoria was badly injured when a manhole cover popped out of the ground.

Emergency crews were called to Eighth and Harrison at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday. Police said they found one worker with a traumatic injury to his head and another worker with minor injuries.

Both were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are not known.

Investigators said the workers are employed by Tapani Inc. They were performing pressure testing on new piping when there was an apparent failure with their equipment.

Police said pressure was vented through the manhole cover, lifting it out of the street.

No other information was immediately available.
