Numerous wrecks piled up across roads and highways in Missouri and Kansas on Saturday as freezing rain and sleet coated roads.
Freezing rain and sleet made roads slick, resulting in numerous accidents. Snow arrived in the metro area Saturday night.
Significant accumulations of snow are possible by daybreak on Sunday.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Kansas City area that continues until noon on Sunday. Due to freezing rain and sleet, some counties in rural Kansas and Missouri saw Saturday more wrecks than normal due to slick roads.
In Kansas City, a fire truck responded to a wreck when a driver lost control on Interstate 435 southbound near 87th Street. A second driver hit the back of the parked fire truck. No one was seriously injured.
A fatal crash in the Northland could be the result of slick roads. In Saline County, four firefighters and a trooper working a crash were injured when a driver traveled too fast on icy Interstate 70.
The Kansas City metro area will see 3 to 6 inches of snow with some isolated areas seeing higher totals.
Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s Sunday afternoon. The heaviest moisture will come after sunset as temperatures drop.
KCTV5 Meteorologist Hallie Shulman said the snow will be moderate to heavy at times and continue through the overnight hours.
"From Atchison to St. Joseph to Bethany and Maryville an intense band of snow could set up producing 5 to 8 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts. The metro to Lawrence, Chillicothe to Lees Summit with 3 to 6 inches of snow," Shulman said. "Further southeast toward Warrensburg to Clinton and Sedalia, a zone of 2 to perhaps 4 inches of snow will be possible. This same area however could see a 10th to a quarter inch of ice accumulation too."
Henry County and other areas in mid-Missouri could see downed tree limbs and power outages due to icing.
The snow will taper off by the time of kickoff for the Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium. It will be bitterly cold for fans, players and coaches at the game.
Once the system leaves on Sunday, the Kansas City area will see cloudy skies and a few snow flurries.
Shulman and KCTV5 Meteorologist Gary Amble will be providing updates on a special KCTV5 It's Your Morning from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday.
Area public works departments have geared up for the weekend storm. The departments of transportation in Kansas and Missouri have crews working around-the-clock.
"We are aware this is a busy travel time," said MODOT district maintenance engineer Jesse Skinner. "We're also aware this is a serious forecast.
Warm temperatures and treatments from previous storms helped prevent the freezing drizzle from turning streets into skating rinks Friday morning.
Some areas of Interstate 70 in Missouri saw a quarter of inch of ice or more.
In anticipation of the ice and snow, many residents made sure they were stocked up on winter supplies. Ice-melting products flew off the shelves.
"I'm a little anxious about the ice and snow," said Joan Brown who was among those buying salt. "I don't want my dog to fall down the back steps and I don't want to fall down them either."
Many Christmas shoppers hit the stores to buy last-minute gifts before the storm arrives or they hit the road early for holiday travel to relatives and friends' homes.
KCTV5 News will have more on the snow preparations and the hour-by-hour forecast. Watch KCTV5 News.
