PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Zoo's newest addition now has a name.

The 6-week-old baby river otter has been named Zigzag, or Ziggy for short.

The name is a tribute to the Zigzag River, a 12-mile-long tributary of the Sandy River that flows down Mount Hood through the Zigzag Canyon.

The zoo had asked for the public's help picking a name from three river-inspired choices. They were Trask, for the river in northwest Oregon; Willamette, with the nickname of Willy, for the major Columbia River tributary; and, of course, Zigzag.

When naming river otters, zoo workers said they like to choose names based on local waterways. Ziggy's mom Tilly was named after the Tillamook River. Her previous pup, Mo, born Jan. 28, was named after the Molalla River.

Zoo workers said more than 8,000 people voted online, with Ziggy earning close to 50 percent of the votes.

Both Tilly and Ziggy are doing well, according to Julie Christie, senior keeper for the zoo's North America area. Visitors can see them from time to time through a den window at the Cascade Stream and Pond habitat.

The pup, born Nov. 8, has recently opened his eyes and started to walk a bit. Zoo workers said river otters usually open their eyes after four to five weeks, and begin walking at five to six weeks.

Baby river otters are very dependent on their mothers, Christie said, and Tilly has been very nurturing with both of her kids.
