Local hairstylists are donating their time and their scissors to cut children's hair for free before Christmas.

The Salvation Army is hosting the Santa Cuts event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 23. It will be at the Salvation Army Moore Street Community & Worship Center, located at 5325 N. Williams Ave. in Portland.

Stylists from Perfect Image Plus Salon are volunteering to cut the hair of kids ages 16 and younger.

A Salvation Army release said that even a haircut for Christmas festivities can be a strain on a family's finances this time of year, but "every child deserves to feel special at Christmas."

"It's the little things that make the season bright," said Capt. Hilary Patterson, a Corps officer at The Salvation Army Moore Street Community & Worship Center. "By partnering with local stylists, we can make Christmas even more special for kids in need."

More than 100 children are expected to attend the event, which is done on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Salvation Army estimates the boys and girls will be receiving more than $1,250 in free services thanks to the support of the hairstylists.

Any other licensed stylists interested in volunteering can contact Nin Dickinson at Perfect Image Plus Salon at 503-283-4905.
