PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police arrested a 29-year-old man who slammed his car into a tree off Barbur Boulevard, killing a passenger on Friday.

Portland police officers and paramedics found 28-year-old Dmitriy Maksimov dead at the scene just after 3 a.m. at Barbur Boulevard and Miles Street.

Police said the driver, Audy Molina-Colindres, lost control on Barbur, crossed over a median through the northbound lanes and slammed into a large tree.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the fatal crash, investigators said.

After the crash, Molina-Colindres was strapped inside and injured. Fire crews were able to remove him and take him to a Portland hospital.

He survived his injuries, and was later taken into custody on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving and manslaughter.

The Major Crash Team is continuing to investigate the crash.

For hours, they shut down Southwest Barbur Boulevard between Terwilliger Boulevard and Capitol Highway to allow for an investigation and cleanup while ODOT advised morning commuters to use an alternate route to get around the scene, and the road fully reopened around 8:15 a.m.

Friday's crash marks the 35th traffic death in Portland this year.
