GEARHART, OR (KPTV) -

A man crossing Highway 101 was hit by a car and critically injured at the Oregon coast.

Oregon State Police said Jake Weil, 20, of Warrenton, attempted to cross the highway near Dellmoor Loop Road about four miles north of Gearhart at 2:50 p.m. Thursday.

The driver of the car, Patricia Rasso, 72, of Vancouver, tried to stop, but couldn't avoid hitting Weil, according to troopers.

Investigators said Weil was attempting to cross the highway to go to a coffee stand.

He was critically injured and taken to a Portland hospital. He remained in critical condition Friday morning.

Rasso and her passenger were not injured. They remained at the scene and have cooperated with investigators.

Police said there is no evidence that Rasso was at fault for the collision.
