Family reports boy stuck by syringe in Christmas sweatshirt

TOUTLE, WA (KPTV) -

A merry Christmas turned into a scary situation for one Washington family, after a boy was stuck by a syringe that was in the pocket of his brand new sweatshirt.

The 16-year-old's family said he tried on the new sweatshirt Wednesday and put his hands in the pocket. He then reacted in pain.

As he pulled his hand out of the pocket, a hypodermic needle was stuck in his finger.

"Just in shock," said Tom Bayse, the teen's stepdad. "My first question was, 'Where did it come from? How did it get in there?'"

Bayse said another syringe was found in the pocket, as well. They both appeared to contain blood and other liquid.

Bayse said his wife bought the sweatshirt at Walmart in Longview almost a month ago. It has sat wrapped under the family's Christmas tree for three weeks.

The teen has to have a series of blood tests before he's officially cleared of any hepatitis or HIV infections, which could take six months.

Deputies from the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office picked up the sweatshirt and syringe, Bayse said. His hope is that it can lead to an arrest, or at least some answers.

"It would be nice if they did, to find the person responsible for this," he said. "This is horrific and I just hope this was an isolated incident."

A call to Walmart's corporate office was not returned Friday.
