Deputies: Career criminal arrested after short chase, crash

Posted: Updated:

A career criminal faces a long list of charges in Washington County after a chase and crash involving a stolen car, deputies said.

Deputies found Zachery Mayes asleep inside a parked, stolen 2013 Toyota Camry late Wednesday night near Southwest Marlin Drive and Southwest Farmington Road in Aloha. Hours earlier, Mayes' friend called police to report that a man she knew as "Zach" told her that he was going to commit a crime, and he had a stolen rifle with him, deputies said. Deputies identified the man as Mayes.

After deputies arrived at the scene, Mayes woke up and drove off. He swerved toward a deputy about three blocks away and crashed into a concrete planter in front of a home at Southwest Farmington Road and Southwest 194th Terrace, deputies said. Mayes tried to run but surrendered a short time later.

"When he came in, he hit this barrier right here, and that bounced him right back out into the driveway," said Lois Parsons, who lives in the home nearby. "So thank God the barrier's here because my daughter's room is right there."

Parsons and her family weren't home at the time of the crash.

Deputies found a stolen bicycle inside the car that Mayes was driving. The bicycle is worth about $1,500. Deputies also found three stolen rifles, they said. One of the rifles was loaded and next to the driver's seat, they added.

"It's kind of scary to think something like that's happening in the area," said Alexandria Pena, who lives down the street.

Since 2001, Mayes has been in the Washington County Jail more than two dozen times for crimes including drug possession and theft, deputies said.

Mayes is scheduled to be arraigned on several charges on Thursday afternoon.

More charges could be filed as the investigation moves forward, deputies said.
