GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A woman said her brother was just trying to get home when he was hit by a car while crossing the street Wednesday night in Gresham.

It happened at East Powell and Northeast Liberty around 6 p.m. Police said the said the man, identified as Ray Lopez, was in the crosswalk when the crash happened.

Witnesses told officers that Lopez was crossing the crosswalk at Liberty when he was struck by an eastbound car.

Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

"They pretty much told me when I came in that his entire right side was broke," his sister Dawn Gossard said. "His eye socket was broken, his cheek, his elbow was broken and protruding through the skin. His pelvis was broken and his shin was shattered."

Gossard said her brother has already had several surgeries and is expected to have many more, followed by months of recovery.

"I didn't know if he was going to make it. I've never seen him that still, and the bruises and everything,"she said. "You couldn't really see his face. It was all black and blue."

She hopes other drivers see the damage done and take this as a lesson.

"Watch those crosswalks. Pay attention if there is someone there," Gossard said. "And, if there's other people stopped, just assume there is a pedestrian."

Police said the driver stayed at the scene of the crash and was cooperating with their investigation.

Alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in the crash, police said. As of Wednesday night, the driver was not facing any charges.
