School districts prepare for forecasted winter storm - KPTV - FOX 12

School districts prepare for winter storm forecasted for Thursday

Posted: Updated:

Several inches of snow is expected to fall in some spots across the region Thursday as a winter storm moves into the area.

As of Wednesday night, school districts in Vancouver, Portland, Beaverton, Salem-Keizer and Albany had not made any decisions about possible school delays or cancellations for Thursday, administrators said. But each of the districts will be watching the forecast closely, they added.

The districts plan to get updates early Thursday morning about possible snow totals. They'll also have employees check on road conditions early to make sure buses can get students to class safely and on time. Most of the districts expect to make decisions by 5 a.m. Thursday about any possible weather-related delays of closures, administrators said.

"We need snow. We need to cancel school," said John Finau, a senior at Sunset High School.

"(My daughter) takes the bus to school, but we'll check before that arrives," said parent Alex Ricketts.

Luckily, most kids were on winter break back in December 2009 when a snowstorm forced up to 1,000 Portland-area drivers to walk away from their cars, according to figures released at the time by the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Leaders from several area school districts said that if enough snow falls after classes begin on Thursday, they are prepared to call for early releases. But there needs to be enough time to notify parents.

It all depends on when the snow hits and how much actually accumulates, they said.

"We can change schedules," said parent Tina Flood. "My work's pretty flexible, so I can get here, as long as I can drive."

Also, Oregon State University plans to have normal operations at its Corvallis campus on Thursday, according to a tweet sent out on the university's Twitter page. If that changes, the university will notify students.

Be sure to watch Good Day Oregon on Thursday from 4:30 to 9 a.m. for the latest forecast and a complete list of any school delays or closures.
