Two Arizona teenagers have been arrested after one allegedly asked for help in killing his ex-girlfriend, with whom he has a 1-year-old child, police said.

Pima County sheriff's detectives arrested and charged Kevin Pettitt and Wyatt Bowman, both 17, with conspiracy to commit murder based on evidence that the two were planning to kill the 18-year-old woman.

Authorities said the teens will be charged in the case as adults.

The sheriff's department said that Pettitt and Bowman began discussing the murder at Christmas.

They conspired to lure her into the desert, shoot her, remove her teeth and then burn her so she could not be identified, sheriff's investigators said. Pettitt offered to pay Bowman an undisclosed amount of money for his help.

"We have to take that very seriously and we have to put a stop to it before something can happen," Pima County Sheriff Deputy Tracy Suitt told tucsonnews.com. "Luckily, in this case, we were able to do that."

Custody issues between Pettitt and his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend over their 1-year-old child, as well as money matters, have been the source of friction between the two, tusconnews.com reported.

Police have not said how much Bowman would be paid or whether the pair had a weapon yet.
