Three-alarm fire rips through NE car repair shop

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Fire investigators are looking for the cause of a three-alarm fire at Northeast 11th Avenue and Couch Street.

The fire broke out late Sunday night in the German Formula repair shop.

The shop repairs German import cars such as Mercedes and BMWs.

Some of the cars in the shop were damaged in the fire, but fire investigators have not yet put a damage estimate on the blaze.

At one point, heavy smoke and a series of explosions in the shop led the Battalion Chief to order firefighters out of the building and take a more defensive stance.

Cold weather also played a part in the difficulty fighting the fire -- the streets were extremely slippery. Eighty firefighters fought the blaze.

German Formula is in an industrial area of town, but there are homes nearby and three had to be evacuated while firefighters fought the blaze.

PGE had to turn off power in a two-block area, but power should be restored sometime Monday morning.
