Days after we learned of a skin infection outbreak among Valley high school wrestlers, we still don't know where the outbreak started or when the canceled sectionals tournament will be rescheduled. We do know the students are eager to get back on the mats.
The students at Desert Vista High School in Ahwahtukee have luckily staved off any skin infections, but they're still impacted in a big way.
"They told us we could go eat, and for us that's pretty big news," senior Tristan Ezell said.
"Everyone was a little thrown off by it, especially with everyone's weight, everyone's mental, everyone's ready to go," said junior Jeremiah Imonode.
They were told to dress down Friday, just an hour before heading to sectionals.
"It wasn't surprising by any means, but just the number of schools was really the surprise," Ezell said.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association canceled 5,000 matches because of a skin infection outbreak. At least 20 students attending at least seven schools had contracted herpes or impetigo.
"It's been almost a week, week and a half since we've last stepped in a live match," Ezell said.
"It just puts the postponement on some of the goals they had set for themselves," coach David Gonzalez said.
He said he's trying to keep his students focused, since the delay is in the middle of the peak of their season.
"Whenever they give us the call to wrestle, my guys will be ready to wrestle," Gonzalez said.
We still don't know when that call will come, but the students appear to be taking it all in stride.
"[I] got to go home and eat a little, get the stress off, sleep in," Imonode said.
"It's something we can't lose sight of because of something happening," Ezell said.
The AIA announced they hope to have an update on when the sectionals will be rescheduled by Tuesday evening.
