NORTH BONNEVILLE, WA (KPTV) -

A fatal crash stopped traffic on State Road 14 on Thursday.

Troopers said two cars were involved in the head-on collision just east of the Bridge of the Gods at Milepost 41 at around 3:30 p.m.

Troopers say 42-year-old Chad Bretsch of Philomath was driving eastbound when his car  crossed over the center line and hit a truck being driven by Karl Wilkie of Carson, WA.

Bretsch died at the scene while Wilkie was transported to Hood River Hospital with unknown injuries.

WSDOT said the crash initially blocked the entire highway. Traffic control was later put in place, with traffic alternating each direction.

At 6:30 p.m., the highway was reopened.

Just prior to the crash, WSDOT announced crews had cleared rocks that fell on the highway near Milepost 66 and blocked traffic earlier in the day.

Further complicating traffic is that this stretch of State Road 14  was being used as a detour for people who normally drive on Interstate 84. Eastbound lanes of I-84 were shut down Wednesday night near Hood River due to a large landslide.

Those lanes will remain closed through the weekend.
