A deadly crash left police searching for the person responsible. Officers said someone hit and killed a pedestrian at Southeast 124th and Powell and then drove away.
Police got the call around 6:30 Saturday night. The victim died at the scene. Officers said the driver at fault left before they got there.
People in the area told Fox 12 it was raining and dark at the time of the crash. One woman who works across the street said she's watched many people try to cross where there are no crosswalks. She said she's even had a few close calls herself.
"I've been in the middle and traffic is swishing by on both sides, and you're just standing like a statue going ‘oh, please' and you can feel it," Cindy Hiatt said. "It's terrible because it's so dark through here, and people move so fast with the traffic that it happens more than you want it to happen."
This is the fifth time a pedestrian has been killed crossing the street in southeast Portland during the last three months.
