Deadly crash investigation underway in NE Portland

Multnomah County Sheriff's Office investigators were on the scene of a deadly accident  where a single car full of people struck a pole. The impact was great enough to shear the pole off at its base.

The crash happened just prior to 6 a.m. at Northeast 102nd and Fremont.

Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Peterson says the driver lost control while driving southbound and his vehicle hit the power pole.

A passenger was killed and a second passenger was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries.

Police say neither passenger was wearing a seat belt. A total of six people were in the vehicle and that one of the passengers ran off following the crash.

The driver, who police say was driving drunk, will be booked into jail after he is released from the hospital. He is expected to face charges of DUII manslaughter, assault and hit-and-run charges.

Names of the driver and victim have not been released.
