CANBY, OR (KPTV) -

What was initially reported as a car crash early Sunday morning turned out to be a death investigation for Canby police.

According to the Canby police chief, at about 5 a.m. emergency responders went to Locust City Park on a report that a car crashed into a couple of other cars, a tree and a pole there.

When they arrived, they found local residents attempting to administer CPR on a man who was the lone occupant of the car.

Edward Spangler, 43, of Grants Pass, was pronounced dead at the scene.  A few minutes later responders reported that they discovered some "suspicious circumstances" surrounding the death, and police were called to the scene.

The police chief later revealed that Spangler appeared to have died from "acts of homicidal violence." He added that "up to two shots" were fired.

It's unclear whether or not a suspect was being sought in the case.

The park was cordoned off with a lot of police tape as the investigation continues.
