PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man is in critical condition after being stabbed in southwest Portland.

Officers found the man on SW Naito Parkway, south of the Burnside Bridge, around 4 a.m. Saturday.

Police were first called to the scene for a report of a person hit by a car, but found the stabbing victim. He was not hit by a car.

Paramedics took Bryce Carlton Powers to the hospital. He had life-threatening injuries and remains in a Portland hospital in critical condition, but police say he is slowly improving.

According to police, Powers, who is homeless, was in an argument with several other homeless men under the Burnside Bridge when he was stabbed.

Detectives are trying to identify the other men involved. They think Powers knows the person who stabbed him.

Police will not allow overnight camping on the sidewalk underneath the Burnside Bridge, due to public safety concerns. The Portland Police Bureau is working with social service agencies to find alternatives for people who need a place to sleep.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the non-emergency line at (503) 823-3333.
