GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Some Upstate sixth graders are working to raise money for a teacher who suffers from constant migraines.
Officials at Bob Jones Academy said Heritage teacher Dennae White needs surgery to make her pain go away that is not covered under her insurance policy.
"I don't really remember what it's like to wake up in the morning and not hurt," said White.
White said she has suffered from the debilitating migraines for at least five years. She said doctors want to implant a brain "pacemaker" to help alleviate her symptoms.
And student Will Ramey said he knows when his teacher is having a bad day, and seeing her in pain pains him. So Will and his mom arranged for him and his friends to serve and clean up at local restaurants to help raise money for White's surgery fund.
"And we have almost $4,000 actually. And we're trying to get $40,000 to help her have no pain," Will said.
White said she is thankful to her students for learning how to become involved in each other's lives.
"This is the kind of thing that always happens to other people and not to you," White said. "And so it was kind of, I remember looking at my mom one day and saying, this surgery could actually happen. And I think, you know the Lord's going to provide, but this was in a way that was completely unexpected."
The next fundraiser is set for April 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pizza Inn on Woodruff Road.
A second fundraiser will be held on April 8 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Mutts BBQ on Highway 14 in Greer.
Officials said all tips and donations given during those times will do directly to White's surgery. There is a website that allows people to donate online as well. Click here to view that site.
