Burglar steals sentimental jewelry box from Battle Ground home

Posted: Updated:

A burglar's heartless act left a Battle Ground family without one of its most sentimental possessions.

Cher Bunkley said someone broke into her home late last week and stole a jewelry box from her bedroom.

Bunkley's father gave the jewelry box to her mother for their first anniversary nearly 50 years ago. Her mother passed away on Feb. 16.

Bunkley said she and her boyfriend left their home at around 12:40 p.m. Friday to grab her daughter some lunch and run an errand. They weren't gone that long, she said.

When they got back home, Bunkley noticed her sliding-glass door was open and a slice of pizza was gone from a pizza box that was on the table. She didn't realize until that night that the jewelry box her mother had passed down to her was missing. There were a bunch of mementos inside, she said.

"They may have gained a few bucks from it or whatever they've chosen, but they've taken something from me that I cannot replace. It's not a TV. It's not a laptop. It's not a bike. It's my mom," Bunkley said.

Bunkley said she believes her neighbor's surveillance camera showed the thief getting into the passenger side of an SUV that briefly stopped in front of her home. It's possibly a Saturn Vue, she said. Once the male got into the passenger side, the SUV left.

Whoever stole Bunkley's jewelry box was only inside her home for about seven minutes, she said. They didn't touch a big-screen TV, an Xbox and other electronics that were also in her home.

Bunkley is now offering a cash reward and plans to bake two dozen of her famous, homemade cupcakes for whomever helps find the thief or her jewelry box, she said.

Bunkley filed a police report about what happened.

She and her family have passed out flyers and posted information about the burglary on social media sites hoping to get the jewelry box back. If you have any information, call the Battle Ground Police Department.
