SHERWOOD, OR (KPTV) -

A man stabbed a dog to death after police said the animal attacked him and his dog.

Sherwood police were called out to an initial report of a dog bite on the 15800 block of Southwest Baler Way at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Aaron Shields told police he was leaving his house with his dog when they were confronted by an aggressive dog.

Police described the dog as a pit bull.

The aggressive dog immediately attacked the victim's dog, officers said, and when Shields tried to intervene, he was bitten by the pit bull.

Investigators said Shields then went back into his home, grabbed a knife and after another failed attempt to break the dogs up, he stabbed the pit bull until the attack ended.

Shields went to the doctor for treatment and his dog was taken to a veterinarian.

The pit bull did not survive.

The pit bull's owner was located and cooperated with the investigation, according to Sherwood police. Jeremy Scott was cited for violation of the city's dangerous dog municipal code. He faces a fine up to $500.
