PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police say a woman was sexually assaulted near the Steel Bridge on Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to a report of the attack at the east end of the bridge at 3 a.m.

The woman told them she had been sexually assaulted but was able to fight off the suspect.

She described the attacker as a black man in his 30s.

People walking across the bridge Wednesday expressed concern for the victim and the potential for another attack.

"That's horrifying and my heart goes out to (the victim) for having had that experience," said Amy Baird, who uses the bridge to get to work. "You certainly never want to hear stories like that."

Portland police said there have been several unrelated sexual attacks in north and northeast Portland in recent months. The police bureau and the city's Crime Prevention Program held an information fair Wednesday at Grant Park Church so the public could learn about the response to sex offenses and the resources to prevent them.

Detectives with the Portland Police Bureau Sex Crimes Unit are now investigating the attack on the bridge, and they're asking anyone with information to call 503-823-4783.
