A 20-year-old Stilwell man was charged with attempted first-degree murder on Friday. He is accused of stabbing his father, who is a neonatal doctor.
Robert Holcomb is recovering at an area hospital from his injuries after being stabbed while walking on a secluded trail at Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. He was conscious when he was rushed to the hospital on Thursday afternoon, and his condition was considered stable on Friday.
His son, Maxwell Holcomb, appeared before a judge Friday afternoon. Prosecutors said he planned the attack and brought a knife with him. Prosecutors said Maxwell Holcomb has significant mental health needs and asked for bond to be set at $500,000.
"I got in a fight and a lot of things happened," Maxwell Holcomb said when the judge asked him about his bond. His right hand was completely covered in bandages.
Authorities say Maxwell Holcomb stabbed his father twice before fleeing on foot. He was arrested in the area of 194th and Flint streets.
The 300-acre publicly owned complex is at 8909 W. 179 St. The stabbing was reported at 2:24 p.m. Thursday.
The arboretum went on lockdown and then closed for the day. The facility reopened Friday morning.
Robert Holcomb was able to call for help. Witnesses hope that indicates he will make a full recovery.
Authorities say him having a cell phone and being able to pinpoint where he was in a massive park likely saved his life.
Robert Holcomb joined Sunflower Neonatology in 2006 after 18 years in the U.S. Air Force. He served on military missions overseas.
He focuses on transporting critically ill newborns, having completed more than 120 national and international critical care transports.
He lives in Stilwell with his wife, three children, four horses, four dogs "and a plethora of other animals."
According to his biography, "baseball, horse shows and soccer occupy most of the family's life."
