Parents asking why Toledo Public Schools kept them waiting all morning

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Receiving online or text message notifications that classes have been canceled for the day this year have been common. Thursday morning however, Toledo parents felt that call came in dangerously late.

When Toledo Public Schools canceled classes yet again, parents demanded answers to why the district waited until the last minute to make that decision.

Originally the schools were going to be on a two-hour delay due to the weather. The science portion of Ohio Graduation Testing was slated to be completed later that day and high school students who were not testing were scheduled to have an early release.

As the roads remained slick from Wednesday's snow storm, officials decided to cancel school altogether.

The message went out around 7:22 a.m., an hour later than normal. Upset parents wanted to know what took so long.

"The bottom line is we were hoping for an improvement between 6 and 8 a.m. but we have to make the call by 8 and we made it at that time," said Jim Gault for Toledo Public Schools.

TPS officials say they made the cancellation decision with safety in mind because of the road conditions.
