Fast-moving fire destroys a Salem home, pets are still missing

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A fast-moving fire destroyed a home in Salem Saturday afternoon.

Marion County Fire District No. 1 responded to the home at Milton Street NE and Lancaster Drive NE around 2 p.m. When crews arrived, they found a home involved in heavy fire, and it was immediately threatening the home which was 20 feet away. Fire crews called for second alarm, asking for more resources to help with the fire.

Firefighters on the scene took a defensive attack on the home, as fire crews used foam to try and extinguish the fire part of the roof of the home collapsed.

There were people inside the home when the fire broke out, but they were able to safely exit without injury. However, six cats and four birds are believed to have died in the fire. The residents were able to get two dogs and two birds out of the home as they evacuated.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the nearby home.

The cause is still under investigation.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with clothing, shelter and medication.
