SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
A 24-year-old man was in custody after a morning-long series of events that included an assault on his mother, a stolen vehicle and a short chase in a Scottsdale apartment complex.
Scottsdale police said Michael B. DeBusman went to his mother's house in the area of 82nd and Oak streets, where he lives part-time, and demanded money from her about 10 p.m. Thursday.
When his 46-year-old mother refused, DeBusman grabbed a glass blender carafe and struck her on the head, she told police.
A 52-year-old man came in the front door and was immediately confronted by DeBusman, who hit him in the head several times with a collapsible metal baton, knocking the man unconscious, police said.
The suspect took the man's wallet and fled in his mother's Toyota SUV.
The mother told police her son had made threats against his grandmother, with whom he also lives with part-time, and a Scottsdale officer was sent to her home as protection until DeBusman could be caught.
A Phoenix police officer spotted the stolen SUV traveling east on Camelback Road about 4 a.m. and tried to stop it, but the vehicle turned into the grandmother's apartment complex near Camelback Road and 68th Street near Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall.
Phoenix officers lost sight of the driver, but shortly after, DeBusman knocked on his grandmother's door while the Scottsdale officer was inside, police said.
When the officer approached DeBusman, he fled into a friend's apartment next door. The woman who lives there told police he was inside, but then DeBusman jumped from a second-floor balcony onto a roof and from the roof onto the balcony of an unoccupied apartment before going inside.
When officers went inside the vacant apartment, DeBusman jumped from another second-story balcony onto the ground, but hurt his leg and couldn't escape.
He was arrested and taken to a Scottsdale hospital for treatment before being released into police custody a few hours later.
DeBusman has an extensive arrest record with Scottsdale police, including drug-related charges, thefts and disorderly conduct, police said.
He was booked into jail on two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of armed robbery.
His mother and the man were treated and released from a Scottsdale hospital, police said.
