Coroner testifies in trial of mother accused of killing 6-month-old son

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The coroner who performed baby Avery's autopsy took the stand Friday. During the testimony the mother, Amanda Bacon, was seen burying her head in her lap.

Inside the courtroom there were graphic pictures that showed the baby's injuries which the coroner says caused his death. Dr. Jeffery Jentzen testified that his findings found the baby's skull with a fracture around the back of the skull from ear to ear. He stated that he found two impact sites and believes baby Avery was struck twice with a large amount of force. Jentzen said there were also signs of severe whiplash.

Prosecution: Was this an accident?

Jentzen: No.

Prosecution: Was this a suicide?

Jentzen: No.

Prosecution: Was this a natural cause?

Jentzen: No.

Prosecution: Was this undetermined?

Jentzen: No.

Prosecution: Was this a homicide?

Jentzen: Yes.

The jury was sent home early Friday so that the prosecution and defense could discuss jury instructions. The jury is expected to begin deliberating Wednesday.
