DICKSON, TN (WSMV) -

Sanitation workers in Dickson County made a shocking discovery Friday when they found an injured puppy in a landfill. Officials believe the dog was intentionally thrown away.

"Anybody would've done the same thing," said Jonathan Owen of Dickson County Solid Waste. "We were just at the right place at the right time."

The workers are quick to say, between the machinery in gear, crunching glass and compacting, it is a very loud place. That's why they're so surprised and grateful, they managed to hear a tiny whimper in the midst of so much noise.

"I operate the machine right here," said worker Troy Holt. "I was pushing a load of garbage, and I thought I heard something."

"Sure enough, it was a little dog," added Owen. "We just pulled it out, brought it out here, got  it some water. It looked pretty dehydrated. How can people do this? It's just unreal."

"I thought it was a shame to see something like that," continued Holt. "He tried to stand up, get out of my way. He'd fall back down. He couldn't stand up or nothing."

"I looked at him, his head was all messed up on one side," said worker Robert Dile. "It looked like it just got mashed."

After getting the dog some water, the workers rushed him to a vet.

After medical care, food, and love, the Last Chance Pet Rescue posted a video to show the dog moving around just fine with his tail wagging. The dog is now in the care of a foster family and has been named Midas.

"Yeah, that's a pretty good name," laughed Holt. "They could've named him Lucky."

"We're lucky we heard it and could do something about it," said Owen. "Hopefully it'll make someone a good dog one day."

Last Chance Pet Rescue workers told us so many donations have been pouring in, they've already got enough to cover all of Midas' medical expenses.
