SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A former teacher in Salem will spend nearly three years in prison on sex abuse charges involving a former student.

Matthew Yoder, 31, was first arrested in February 2012. The McMinnville man was accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl.

He was a teacher at Western Mennonite School in Salem and she was a student.

School administrators first reported the abuse, and the report was forwarded to McMinnville detectives by the Department of Human Services.

Yoder originally faced charges of coercion, rape and sex abuse. In March, he pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree sex abuse.

He was sentenced this week to 32 months in prison and he must register as a sex offender upon his release.
