Waldport firefighter to lose leg to cancer

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

He's a father of four, a little league coach and a volunteer firefighter. And he's getting ready for the fight of his life.

Jiah Quayle has been diagnosed with senovial sarcoma, and has a cancerous tumor growing in the arch of his left foot. It has cost him mobility and full function of his leg. Doctors at Oregon Health & Science University are now telling him the best treatment is amputation.

"I really don't know what to expect," said Jiah Quayle. "I have a lot of faith in what they do. There's a lot of good doctors up there."

In spite of his predicament, Jiah Quayle and his wife Jamie are almost shockingly optimistic. After his surgery and five rounds of chemotherapy, Quayle plans to return to full-duty as a firefighter, even though he'll have a prosthetic leg.

"I think the six months of his life that might be really hard for him, for the family, it's worth having him around for many more years," said Jamie Quayle.

That's not to say it's going to be easy. Jiah and Jamie Quayle have four kids, and right before they found out about his prognosis, they found out they are expecting a fifth.

Their friends in Waldport have stepped up to help, launching a website on YouCaring.com called Help Fight for Jiah, to raise money for his medical bills.

Jiah Quayle's surgery is scheduled for Thursday morning.
