WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Repair efforts are nearly complete and the Route 5 tunnel is expected to reopen Friday at about 12 p.m.

The tunnel was closed in February because of deterioration to the driving surface. The existing concrete surface was removed and replaced by MassDOT contractor SPS New England.

The cost of the job was roughly $800,000.

The road still needs to be sealed and pavement markings need to be added. The tunnel could possibly open sooner than expected.
