TILLAMOOK, OR (KPTV) -

A 25-year-old man who was rock climbing on Cape Kiwanda was hit by a large wave that swept him into the Pacific Ocean.

Tillamook County deputies said the man was using a rope climbing system to scale a section of the cape above the surf when the large wave came crashing in around 3 p.m.

Witnesses said he was not using any additional safety lines or equipment.

Helicopters and a ship from the U.S. Coast Guard were sent to the area to help search for the man, but he has not been found.

He was identified Friday evening as James Alejandro, 25, of Portland.

Deputies said the search for Alejandro will continue over the next several days.
