Teen couple attacked in McMinnville park, two arrested

Posted: Updated:

A high school couple was attacked by a group of six other teens at McMinnville City Park Monday night, in what the victim's family is calling "a trap."

Rick Meyer said his 16-year-old grandson and his grandson's girlfriend were taking a walk after a night of swimming at the city pool.

The couple and another friend walked down some stairs near a creek that runs through the park, McMinnville Police said. That is when two teenage girls started yelling and screaming obscenities at them.

"They had a trap set and my grandson and his girlfriend walked right into it," Meyer said.

The girls started punching and kicking the couple, and then four teenage boys joined in on the fight, police said. Another person in the instigating group shot cell phone video, while as many as six people punched and kicked Meyer's grandson.

Police said, the group eventually ran away, and Meyer's grandson and his girlfriend were taken to an area hospital. Both were released late Monday night. The male victim suffered a broken nose, cuts and bruises. The female victim sustained injuries to the back of head.

The two girls that allegedly instigated the attack were arrested and charged with assault. They will be back in juvenile court on Friday. There may be more arrests in this case, police said.

"They weren't waiting for someone," Meyer said. "They were just waiting for anyone."
