VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A Beaverton man is charged with rape involving a 15-year-old girl he met online.

Nicholas Rhine, 23, made his first appearance in court Wednesday.

According to court documents, the case began in July 2013. The alleged victim, now 16 years old, told detectives that she met Rhine using a smartphone app called Kik Messenger.

According to the company's website, Kik allows people to chat and send messages and video using usernames instead of phone numbers.

The girl said she told Rhine she was only 15, court documents state.

The girl said she met Rhine in person on July 6 at Orchards Park in Vancouver, according to a probable cause affidavit. That affidavit states the girl told police she had sexual intercourse with Rhine inside his vehicle at the park.

Vancouver police detectives interviewed Rhine, who admitted to having sex with the girl and knowing that she was 15 years old, according to court documents.

Rhine is charged with third-degree child rape. He posted bail and is due back in a Clark County courtroom for a formal arraignment on May 21.
