FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
Posts on social media have sparked a controversy in the Shoals. As a result, several locations will no longer sell Shoals-made ice cream.
Garrett Shirey, one of three brothers behind Shirey Ice Cream, is accused of posting derogatory comments on Twitter towards gays.
An example of one of the posts is as follows, in reference to the Boy Scouts retreating on the no-gay policy, he responds, "Shame on the BAS. Sissified effeminates."
After the tweets were brought to people's attention, several local markets decided to stop selling Shirey Ice Cream. Places like Alabama Chanin and Jack-O-Lantern Farms said they don't agree with the posts and have chosen not to sell ice cream made by Shirey.
After that decision was made, Shirey Ice Cream posted on Facebook, claiming Jack-O-Lantern Farms is no longer carrying their product because of their biblical beliefs, and they say they support their brother's comments.
The owners of Jack-O-Lantern say that is simply not true. They said this has nothing to do with religious beliefs – they say they were upset at the language used in the tweets, saying they won't stand for hateful language towards anyone.
"Whether it would have been to homosexuals, farmers, news people, it was still very hurtful comments that shouldn't have been made about any group of people. We just felt that was not our thing to have in our business," said Steve Carpenter of Jack-O-Lantern Farms.
We tried contacting Shirey Ice Cream via telephone via the number listed on their website, but have not heard back. Click here to read more of the tweets and the responses made on Facebook regarding them.
